WWF-Uganda Launches Green School Project to Boast Environment Stewardship in Rwenzori Sub Land Scape

The initiative is in collaboration with WWF-Denmark.
The four-year project is focused on children and youth becoming change agents for sustainable resource management and climate change adaptation.
The green school project will benefit 35 schools, targeting 31,000 girls and boys aged 7-18 years in the districts of Kasese, Bunyangabu, Kabarole, Ntoroko and Rubirizi.
Representing the WWF Country Director at the launch held at Kanyampara Primary School in Bukara Sub county in Bunyangabu District, Simon Peter Weredwong said that the project is envisaged to create a green and healthy school environment where children will access knowledge to create sustainable and climate resilience change locally.
He noted that schools that will perform better in delivering to the project goal will have a chance to get other opportunities in future.
Weredwong asked schools to guide children to repalicate the practice of green environment in their homes.
Benjamin Etubi Ojelel, the climate change and nature based solutions manager and green project manager at WWF-Uganda told URN that the project inculcates and fosters a sense of civic responsibility amongst students for reducing their ecological footprint.
It engages students and teachers in a structured environmental awareness and wants government to consider introducing environment conservation in the ciricula.
The Bunyangabu District LCV Ategeka Mugarama and the Kabarole District education officer Joseph Rujumba committed support of the local leadership and school managements to ensure the project delivers to its goal.
Alice Natukunda, community conservation warden with Uganda Wildlife Authority-UWA who represented the chief warden Queen Elizabeth National park as chief guest at the project launch, was optimistic that the project will see a new generation that is valuing conservation of nature.
