Players in the coffee value chain in Rwenzori region have asked government for financing if the country was to meet its export target of 20million bags of coffee per year.
They made the appeal on Monday 25th march 2019 in a meeting for Rwenzori region coffee value chain actors organized by Gen Salim Saleh the country’s chief Operation Creation Coordinator at Virina gardens.
According to Abdullah Malege the coordinator for coffee farmers in Rwenzori and also a renowned coffee farmer with 400 acres of coffee plantation in Kabarole district, the coffee sector lacks financing from government towards small scale farmers to boost their production levels of quality coffee.
The Director Incharge of coffee, tea and cocoa in Operation Wealth Creation Brig Gen Charles Anywar told the meeting that currently Uganda produces 5million bags of coffee which is far less the country’s annual target of 20million bags.
While officially opening the meeting, the Kasese district chairperson Sibendire Bigogo had observed that despites by local farmers to impress coffee growing, the biggest challenge they are still facing is financing to buy the necessary equipments needed to improve coffee production and quality.
