KASESE: The Kasese Municipality Deputy Speaker Kahene Bwambale has said some parents in Kasese are fueling child marriage by negotiating with the vice perpetrators in exchange for money.
Kahene revealed that most of the child marriage cases were dying in villages without police notice due to money hungry parents who end up giving out their young children to old men against the children’s desire.
He made the revelations at a one day meeting aimed at reducing child marriages in rural communities organized by Uganda Media Development Foundation at Virina gardens in Kasese town on 8th February.
The Executive Director Uganda Media Development Foundation Michael Kigozi revealed to participants that child marriage cost a lot to the health sector of Uganda since most of the young mothers’ wombs are not always ready for delivery.
Kigozi said annually Uganda spends about thirty billion of its health sector budget towards attending to young expectant mothers with delivery complications thus appealing to leaders at all levels to combine efforts in stopping the vice.
Other stakeholders reported domestic violence, poverty and family negligence as some of the key factors fueling child marriage in Kasese. END
