KASESE. Coffee berry bore, a rare coffee pest is ravaging big acreage of coffee plantations in the sub-county of Kitholhu just a few years after the area was attacked by banana wilt that left farmers astonished.
According to Aaron Kibaya one of the farmers in the area who interacted with our reporter at Kanyatsi Primary school, the pest invasion has become a big challenge for some time leading to poor coffee harvest, a situation he said has reduced household incomes in the sub-county.
He however said that the area leadership especially the sub-county agricultural officer Peter Musubaho is trying to sensitize and educated the locals on how to fight the pest.
Equally, Musubaho said coffee farmers in the sub-county, during the era of Dr. Kiyonga Crispas as MP Bukonzo west now Uganda’s ambassador to China, used to receive timely response from Uganda Coffee Development Authority.
Meanwhile, the sub-county chairperson Amon Mwero urged farmers to spray their plantations with pesticides if they are to harvest to their expectations adding that farmers should employ better techniques of farming as a sure way to fight the challenge.
